CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Portia gripped the wheel, thankful she was driving her own car. She shifted from Drive to third gear so the engine would do the braking for her, without her hitting the pedal. It would give her better traction, and hopefully keep them from careening out of control.
Off a cliff.
They were now half a mile off the highway, somewhere in southern Washington. Behind them the lights of a lifted 4X4 truck lit up the rearview mirror so that all she saw behind her was glare. Atop the roof of the truck, two more lights cut through the gloom of this cloudy day.
Too bad for the guy behind her, sheâd been driving on roads like this since she was fourteen and her dad let her sit on a phone book so she could reach the pedals.
Declan shifted to look out the back window. âHeâs right on top of us.â
He touched the spot on his chest where heâd been hit by that bullet and hissed out a breath. But Portia didnât have time to worry about him. She shifted back to Drive and hit the gas. Took the tight turn that wound in a hairpin.
The truck would struggle on some of these dirt tracks, the wheels wider than hers. But she couldnât count on the fact heâd misjudge some turn and go over the edge.
No, she had to get them out of this herself.
The truck engine roared. It bore down on them.
A gunshot rang out.
The back window shattered. Portia gripped the wheel and kept it steady as she turned. The road inclined downward. She shifted back to third again, and the engine changed gear. The car slowed. The truck drew closer.
If he hit her now, this would be the end. She had to fight between basic safety and not dying. One wrong move andâ¦bye.
What if she couldnât do this? God, I need Your help. Praying didnât come naturally. Not when she could take care of herself. But Portia had to face the fact this was out of her control. Whatever she did, it might not be enough to keep them alive. Only God could save them.
They passed a driveway, the house completely still. No cars parked there. Blinds drawn. Portia drove on. This neighborhood in the middle of nowhere was likely a maze of streets that ensured anyone who didnât live there got completely lost.
The farther she drove, the lower the chance they were going to find the highway again. Headed back to Seattle, theyâd been going north. Now they were headed northeast. She turned a bend. Southeast. Farther and farther from their destination.
She glanced at the dash screen. âHit the phone button.â She pointed for a second, then gripped the wheel again.
Declan understood enough that he got in her recent calls. He found the entry where Lenny had updated her on everything while Declan had been sleeping. He tapped it and the car, connected by Bluetooth to her phone, tried to make a connection.
The screen flashed. No signal.
Portia slammed her hand on the wheel.
